About This Spot

Walking into Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is like stepping back into a time when New York's deli culture was centered on simple pleasures, warm welcomes, and hearty meals shared over stories. The elongated space, framed by light wood and exposed brick, feels both inviting and lively, with walls adorned by an array of memorabilia that quietly anchor you in the city’s culinary history. Here, the pace is unhurried yet buzzing with the low hum of conversation and clinking dishes—an atmosphere where locals and visitors alike settle in to savor moments as much as the food.

The essence of Sarge’s lies in its embrace of tradition, both in its atmosphere and its kitchen. It’s a place where the old-school deli spirit lives on through generous portions and thoughtful touches—a quart of pickles shared at the table, coleslaw that complements without overwhelming, and the comforting ritual of choosing between pastrami or corned beef, each slice tender and seasoned with care. Whether you’re drawn by the smoky richness of a hot sandwich pulled together with care or the quiet satisfaction found in a bowl of classic chicken consommé, the experience is one of genuine, grounded comfort.

Despite its longstanding reputation, Sarge’s never feels weighed down by nostalgia alone. There’s a sincerity here—a human moment wrapped in the ritual of well-made food and welcoming service. It’s the kind of place where you might end a day with a dense, creamy slice of cheesecake shared over easy conversation, or discover something unexpected, like delicate potato pancakes or a smoked fish platter, that broadens the story of what a deli can be.

For anyone eager to connect with a slice of New York’s culinary soul, Sarge’s offers more than just a meal. It’s a shared experience—the comforting hum of an old favorite, the warmth of a spot that remembers its roots, and the quiet joy found in every thoughtful detail.

The Hungry Road 28 Dec 2025

(Last visited December 19, 2023.) Working in Manhattan for the week and as I'm working my way through the many restaurants I have bookmarked, I have finally made my way to Sarge's. Here's how it went! Do they even need my review? Nope, but they're gonna get it anyway! Lol. Atmosphere/Appearance: It's an elongated style restaurant with lots of light wood on top of brick and just tons of memorabilia all over the place of celebrities who have passed through these doors. When you first walk in you're greeted by the host's stand then there are a few tables on your left, small booths on the right and then further back the dining room opens up a bit. Up front is the actual meat counter where through the glass you can see the different cuts of meat, vegetables and much more! The noise level was moderate, but this place wasn't meant to be fancy. Service: The menu was enormous. There were so many things to choose from! I can't remember the name of the young lady that took care of me, but I feel like her name started with a G... or maybe it was a J.? I don't know, but she was awesome. Food: Some restaurants give you complimentary bread, this place gives you 2 kinds of pickles and coleslaw. Lol. One of them is like a super cucumbery-like pickle and I'm just not a fan of those. I was able to try 2 different kinds of sandwiches while here. First was the corned beef and these were enormous sandwiches. Like, seriously. First up was the corned beef which was just perfect. Warm, salty, meaty and the Russian dressing added a little bit of sweetness that help cut the salty, heartiness of the sandwich. The choice of bread was grand because it added just a little bit of flavor, but didn't take away from the ingredients inside the bread. The pastrami sandwich was great as well, but it couldn't hold a candle to the corned beef. That could be a personal preference, but that's just how I feel. This one looked a bit different even though the main coloration is similar to the corned beef, the pastrami had a black crust around the edges of each slice from all the additional spices that are added to the brined beef. It's just upper echelon quality beef that Sarge's serves. Excellently executed. Lastly, I finished with the thickest slice of strawberry cheesecake that I've seen in recent years. Lol. Once I put a bite in my mouth I couldn't do anything but laugh. It was so good. So creamy, juicy, cold and just... perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about it! Value: My sandwich was $30.95 in which half of it was corned beef and half was pastrami. The cheesecake was $12.95, but it was gigantic. The food here was pricey, but the portions were OUTRAGEOUS. Lol. I'd say it was totally worth the money because you'll have stuff to take home. Each sandwich can totally feed 2 people. In conclusion, I loved it here and was happy to have finally made it! I'll surely come back in the future to check out some of their other menu items! You should too!

Walking into Sarge’s I knew the food would be genuinely delicious. The restaurant immediately gave the old school, original deli impression. The french onion soup was the best I’ve tried. I am not a fan of pastrami on rye as a dish, but I could easily tell this was probably as good as the dish can get. The pastrami was tender and perfectly seasoned. Definitely recommend dining here.

Visited this place back in early November 2023 to catch up with an old friend. Originally wanted to take out some pastrami sandwich, which I did. But we had dessert of Cheesecake and I am a lemon meringue pie person, and it was incredible! The take out pastrami sandwich was also delicious when I got back to the accommodation for a late night supper. Personally, prefer the thinner cuts for my sandwiches. The staff were incredibly kind and fun to talk with! Warm regards from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! And hope to be back in due time!

Great deli place with a correct price for NYC. Portions are good and the combo soup and half sandwich is great to get warm and try some meat. Tte soup came mildly cold and tainted the experience. Though, the pickles and coleslaw are good as free appetizers.

This is our first family trip to New York and we wanted to go to a classic deli. We decided to go to Sarge’s as we were in uptown. This was amazing. I got the pastrami sandwich but asked to have half a pastrami sandwich and half a corned beef sandwich to have a taste of both. The lady was very accommodating and was able to get this done for me. The pastrami beef was very generous, as was the corn beef. The pastrami beef was not too salty and was very tender. The corned beef was also very good and seasoned well so that you could taste the beef and also could differentiate between the corned beef and pastrami. The turkey sandwich that my wife got also had very generous meat slices. Also, complementary, the coleslaw and pickles came. The pickles were both the fresh pickles that were lightly Brined and the more heavily brined classic pickles. The coleslaw was a moderately sweet slaw with only a slight amount of mayonnaise. In the sandwich, was a very nice crunchy component to the sandwich. I have never been to Katz’s deli so I couldn't tell you whether this was better or the same as Katz’s, but I can tell you that I will definitely come back here as I did not have to wait for a table, and the service was excellent.

I stumbled on this place looking for a late(ish) evening meal, around 9PM. It was a slower period, which I appreciated as I didn't feel rushed. The matzoh ball soup was amazing-- one of the best broths I have had, and the matzoh ball was large and fluffy. I also got a half pastrami sandwich, which was flavorful, with lots of meat, and soft, fresh, rye bread. There were good pickles and coleslaw served with, too, and nice mustard on the table. I had a delicious Brooklyn IPA, and finished with a ginormous slice of cheesecake, which wasn't photogenic, but was delicious. I'll definitely be back.

Solid deli in Murray Hill with some seating if you do sit-down. It’s quiet on weekday. Two people can split a sandwich. I liked the Pastrami Ruben but would always like more sauerkraut. The staff were friendly. Not a lot of the decor has changed in a while but it’s pretty cozy.

Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is one of those classic NYC spots that still gets it right. I ordered the tuna salad and the corned beef, and both were exactly what you want from a real deli. The tuna salad was fresh, well-seasoned, and not overly heavy, and the corned beef was tender, flavorful, and piled high the way it should be. The portions are generous, the food feels old-school in the best way, and the vibe is pure New York diner energy. It’s the kind of place you come to when you want something filling and reliable, not trendy. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the mood for a proper deli meal.
